The Citadel of Lost Ships is a science fiction novella by Leigh Brackett. This is pure space opera from the undisputed "Queen of Space Opera."It was a Gypsy world, built of space flotsam and shipwrecks, peopled with the few free races of the Solar System. Roy Campbell, outcast prey of the Coalition, entered its depths to seek haven for the Kraylens of Venus - only to find that it had become a slave trap from which there was no escape. The Kraylens are a dying tribe, a scrap of old Venus, but Campbell is determined to help those that had helped him! "Roy Campbell woke painfully. His body made a blind, instinctive lunge for the control panel, and it was only when his hands struck the smooth, hard mud of the wall that he realized he wasn't in his ship any longer, and that the Guard wasn't chasing him, their guns hammering death."The Citadel of Lost Ships was first published in Planet Stories magazine in 1943. In 1944 the novella was a finalist to Best Retro Novelette Hugo Award. 12.000 words, reading time approximately 1 hour, 20 min.Leigh Douglass Brackett (1915-1978) was an American author, particularly of science fiction, and has been referred to as the Queen of Space Opera. She was also a screenwriter, known for her work on such films as The Big Sleep (1946), Rio Bravo (1959) and The Long Goodbye (1973). She was the first woman shortlisted for the Hugo Award. [Elib]

The Stellar Legion is a short science fiction story by Leigh Brackett. No one had ever escaped from Venus' dread Stellar Legion. And, as Thekis the low-Martian learned, no one had ever betrayed it - and lived. The Stellar Legion, fighting on Venus against the natives, is quite the opposite of stellar. Rather, they're the dregs of the service, the psychotic, the criminal, the dishonored. But when the young commander Lehn encounters one of his new underlings, MacIan, he senses that something about him is different.MacIan seems like an honorable and brave soldier. Still, when it turns out that someone in their company is a traitor, and it looks like MacIan, Lehn is willing to admit that his instinct might've been wrong. But was he really wrong? The Stellar Legion was first published in Planet Stories magazine in 1940. 5,700 words, reading time approximately 40 min.Leigh Douglass Brackett (1915-1978) was an American author, particularly of science fiction, and has been referred to as the Queen of Space Opera. Black Amazon of Mars is a science fiction novel by Leigh Brackett. This is the third story to feature Brackett's hero Eric John Stark. This gore drenched story finds Eric John Stark, the barely civilized warrior raised on Mercury struggling to bring a dying Martian friend back to his home city in the North of Mars before he passes away. Unfortunately, his friend does die on the way and lays a most unwanted last request on Stark before the end; to bring a precious stolen talisman back to the city. The journey there introduces the intimidating Black Amazon of Mars. Stark was born on Mercury. His parents were employees of the mineral extraction company Mercury Metals and Mining. After his parents died in a cave-in caused by a quake, Stark was adopted by a tribe of Mercurian aborigines who are described as hairy and possessing snouts. They gave him the name N'Chaka, meaning "the man without a tribe". He believed himself to be one of them, rather than a human, and endured their rigorous way of life in the Mercurian Twilight Belt, surviving by hunting rock-lizards.Before Stark was fully grown, another group of human miners exterminated his tribe, captured Stark and imprisoned him in a cage. They would ultimately have killed him if he had not been rescued by the police official Simon Ashton, who raised Stark to adulthood. The stories of the adult Stark are fast-paced adventures, but Brackett manages to insert more pathos than most authors. Because of his background, Stark is keenly aware of the injustices visited on the planetary "primitives" by the colonialist Earth, and tends to side with them against official bodies.Black Amazon of Mars is the third story to feature Brackett's hero Eric John Stark, and was later expanded into the novel People of the Talisman. It was first published in Planet Stories magazine in 1951. 24.000 words, reading time approximately 2 hours, 40 min. Also available as audiobook, read by Gregg Margarite. Leigh Do

The Jewel of Bas is a science fiction novella by Leigh Brackett.A quest to the Mountain of Life to save what remained by humanity from the machines that were bent on destroying them."Ciaran felt good. The heat of the sunballs that floated always, lazy in a reddish sky, made him pleasantly sleepy. And after the clamor and crush of the market squares in the border towns, the huge high silence of the place was wonderful. He and Mouse were camped on a tongue of land that licked out from the Phrygian hills down into the coastal plains of Atlantea. A short cut, but only gypsies like themselves ever took it. To Ciaran's left, far below, the sea spread sullen and burning, cloaked in a reddish fog.To his right, also far below, were the Forbidden Plains. Flat, desolate, and barren, reaching away and away to the up-curving rim of the world, where Ciaran's sharp eyes could just make out a glint of gold; a mammoth peak reaching for the sky."This novella was included in The Best of Leigh Brackett (Ballantine Books, 1977.) The Beast-Jewel of Mars is a science fiction novella by Leigh Brackett.Bark Winters was a painting, shambling ape, fleeting through dark and echoing pits of horror. Behind him hissed the lashes of the jeering mob, savagely exultant at having debauched still another proud Terran into something that crawled. All the dark secrets of Terran evolution were laid bare in this garden of evil, under that prism of hell! The wise men of Caer Dhu were not so wise. They found the secret of Shanga, and they escaped their wars and their troubles by fleeing backward along the path of evolution. The Beast-Jewel of Mars was first published in Planet Stories magazine in 1948. 15,000 words, reading time approximately 1 hour and 40 min.
